Gravity & Other Myths: Ten Thousand Hours
October 23-24
Boston Arts Academy Theater
Dazzling debuts from around the world, and two landmark American companies
Three international companies make Vivo Performing Arts debuts this season, and each arrives with something genuinely new to say. Australia’s Gravity & Other Myths turns the discipline behind contemporary circus into a living, breathing love letter to determination and persistence. Vancouver’s Ballet BC asks questions through movement that most choreographers don’t dare pose. And, at the Museum of Science's Public Science Common, Taiwanese dancer and choreographer Huang Yi takes the stage with an industrial robot arm and makes it feel like the most human partnership you’ve ever witnessed.
For the first time since 2005, the Limón Dance Company returns, celebrating their 80th anniversary season with a fascinating program. Mexican American dancer and choreographer José Limón shaped midcentury modern dance, and his Mazurkas (1958) is bright, lyrical, and set to music by Chopin. The program also features a new work by Akram Khan, his first set on an American company, inspired by Limón's definitive The Moor's Pavane.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns for the second full season under the leadership of former company star and Juilliard Dance Department Chair Alicia Graf Mack. Expect new works, Ailey revivals, and the perennial crowd-pleaser Revelations.
