A Stringfest Program
Shaw Pong Liu, a violinist and erhu player known for her groundbreaking educational collaborations and engagement with social issues, teams up with poet and literary performer Regie Gibson for a new duet piece, commissioned by Vivo Performing Arts. The duet piece will be a companion to an earlier erhu-inspired work by Gibson.
Young musicians from City Strings United and The Boston Music Project will then perform arrangements of traditional songs that would have been sung by the Chinese and Black workers who built the transcontinental railroad. The student musicians will perform Liu's arrangements of Chinese folksongs as well as work songs and other selections from African American traditions.
Whether you’re accompanying your young musician, or if you just want to hear some amazing adult performers as they mentor and support a group of talented kids, we invite you to explore strings, poetry, and multicultural collaboration at the first Stringfest of the season! Stringfest performances offer young musicians an opportunity to learn from and perform alongside renowned Boston-based musicians and spoken-word artists.
