The Brentano Quartet—fearless, spellbinding players whose attention to detail and to each
other give their music freshness and life—bring us "Flights of Fugue," a program that exposes
the unflinching heart of late quartets by Shostakovich and Beethoven. Paired arrangements of
piano works that mirror each other across the centuries set a deceptively orderly tonal roadmap
for the flights of passion and intensity that follow. Both quartets strain the boundaries of the
form: massive in scale and throwing expectations about tempo and mood aside, they are
revelatory, showcasing the unity, vivid intelligence, and ensemble playing that set the Brentanos
apart.
“Make no mistake: the Brentanos are a magnificent string quartet. This was wonderful, selfless music-making.”
