Established on July 30, 1630, First Church in Boston was founded in what became the New England Congregationalist tradition. The church later embraced Unitarian theology in the 19th century, and welcomed the 20th century merger with Universalism.
The church has occupied its current site on the corner of Marlborough and Berkeley Streets since 1868, when the Back Bay was brand new. The church's current home is a fully accessible 1972 modern building with outstanding acoustics.
