Established on July 30, 1630, First Church in Boston was founded in what became the New England Congregationalist tradition. The church later embraced Unitarian theology in the 19th century, and welcomed the 20th century merger with Universalism.
The church has occupied its current site on the corner of Marlborough and Berkeley Streets since 1868, when the Back Bay was brand new. The church's current home is a fully accessible 1972 modern building with outstanding acoustics.
The First Church in Boston is an Accessible venue. Two steeply inclined wheelchair ramps are available on the Marlborough Street side of the building. The cushioned chair seating in the church can be removed as needed for access needs. To reserve accessible seating in advance, please submit an accessibility request here. Accessible bathrooms are located on the main floor.
